CITIC Pacific’s primary lines of business include special steel manufacturing, iron ore mining, and property development in mainland China.
A costly burden
CITIC Pacific was using other products for servers and end-points; however, a large volume of spam was still penetrating networks on a daily basis, burdening email servers and wasting employee time.
Franklin Lau, IT Services deputy general manager for CITIC Pacific, estimates that each of the company’s 150 active email users spent at least 30 minutes daily managing email and manually filtering spam. “Employees were complaining,” said Lau, “[because] spam was corrupting end user mailboxes [and] taking up all of the email server space. More importantly, spam interrupted employee productivity.”
CITIC Pacific sought a gateway email security solution to reduce email server workloads and recapture employee productivity.
CITIC Pacific evaluated several solutions and selected Axway MailGate based on strong customer references. They selected the MailGate 4550 Appliance in HA mode, with Intelligent Edge Defense, Antispam and Antivirus modules.
The MailGate appliance took less than one day to unpack, rack mount and configure. CITIC Pacific tested the appliance for a few weeks and then went live.
Immediately, MailGate exposed the fact that 70 percent of CITIC’s inbound email traffic (450,000 messages annually) was comprised of illegitimate messaging (spam). “Since deploying Axway MailGate, we are now offloading 70 percent of our email traffic. Security, Cost Savings, Real-time Monitoring
Axway MailGate has generated a savings of 75 man hours per day, or 20,000 man-hours per year, for CITIC Pacific. Additionally, MailGate monitors real-time performance of the email server, saving the company operations cost during non-office hours.
