Axway Gateway offers a large range of protocols so it is quick and easy to set up secure communications with new partners.

BGL became a member of the BNP Paribas Group, a European leader in banking and financial services, in May 2009.

BGL BNP Paribas is one of the largest banks in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with a balance sheet totalling €39.3 billion as of June 2011. BGL BNP Paribas is also one of Luxembourg’s largest employers, serving both national and international clients.

BGL BNP Paribas offers an especially wide range of financial products to individuals, professionals, private banking clients and businesses. BGL BNP Paribas is Luxembourg’s number-one provider of services for private banking and enterprise customers; it is also number two in providing services for individuals.

Enhanced Security to Meet Growing Communication

Protecting sensitive data throughout file transfer

BGL adopted Axway’s tools in 2005 to manage file transfers with its external partners. In 2009, when BNP Paribas became the major shareholder of BGL BNP Paribas, BGL BNP Paribas benefitted from the compatibility of its Axway solutions with those implemented by the BNP Paribas Group.¹

BGL BNP Paribas was faced with security constraints. In effect, the data to be transferred had to be secured according to its level of confidentiality, and it became necessary to implement security measures with regard to different levels of security classifications. "The bank decided to use the secure protocols provided with Axway Gateway (sFTP, HTTPs or Pesit-SSL1) to encrypt communication channels, and if necessary, encrypt at the application level with third party software to ensure end-to-end security," explained Michel Fenard, IT Middleware Manager at BGL BNP Paribas.

BGL BNP Paribas implemented infrastructure for managed file transfer based on Axway Gateway and Secure Relay. The new platform has been useful for the bank’s integration within the BNP Paribas Group. "As our communication needs continue to grow, particularly in light of the merger with BNP Paribas, but also with requirements to connect with new business partners, Axway Gateway has provided the ideal secure multi-protocol platform. Business needs are continually changing, and an increasing number of file transfers are required. Axway Gateway offers a large range of protocols so it is quick and easy to set up secure communications with new partners," said Fenard.

Consolidation for Optimal Worldwide Coverage

Centralized file hubs increase efficiency and security

Rather than implement and manage a large number of gateways, the bank decided to consolidate file transfers and data exchange over two Axway MFT gateways, using PeSIT as the common protocol within the group, as well as various other protocols such as FTP, sFTP, HTTP, HTTPs and Swiftnet to exchange with external partners (outside the BNP Paribas group):

Group 1 Axway Gateway for BNP Paribas group partners

Group 2 Axway Gateway for BGL BNP Paribas’ external partners

For file transfers within the group, BGL BNP Paribas transfers data directly via Brussels or through the Axway Transfer CFT Hub located in Paris with connections to 950 Axway Transfer CFT instances worldwide. "If we need to exchange data with an entity in Singapore, for example, instead of having to contact them, and test the link, we simply send the data to the Axway Transfer CFT hub in Paris, as there is already an open path to Singapore. The link is immediate and very practical for us. The connections to 950 Axway Transfer CFT hubs at BNP Paribas in Paris give us access to the entire world. In addition, rather than having 100 direct links or more to manage and monitor, our communications are concentrated on one platform for the group," explained Fenard.

At BGL BNP Paribas, we have gained many benefits through our use of Axway solutions.

Axway’s Feature-Rich Solution Brings Many Benefits

Key performance indicators

"At BGL BNP Paribas, we have gained many benefits through our use of Axway solutions," Fenard further explained. "For example, we work with event mechanisms for file transfer. When a file arrives we can automatically activate the process to send the file where it needs to go. This really saves us a lot of time because there is no need to write scripts. We are also using Axway Sentinel more and more, and we really appreciate the features provided with the dashboards. The IT department uses Axway Sentinel dashboards and KPIs. The middleware integration team can generate reports concerning file transfers. From a purely technical standpoint, we look at the records available within the central Axway Sentinel database, and we can accurately determine the best time to perform maintenance on servers with the lowest impact to business."

BGL BNP Paribas also makes use of Axway Sentinel’s Universal Agent, which provides for reporting on file transfers that are external to the Axway solution. Indeed, only one unique monitoring tool is needed for any kind of transfer that occurs. The centralized database provides a complete mapping of all files exchanged. Fenard continued, "It is very useful to have a global view of all transfers between countries and platforms, which enables us to monitor the increase in volumes, to analyze impact to the infrastructure, and to investigate errors as they occur."

It says a lot for Axway’s solutions that we have been able to maintain the same staffing requirements despite the sharp increase in file transfers. With Axway’s centralized management and monitoring solutions, more transfers and more complexity does not necessarily translate to more monitoring work.

Centralized Monitoring With a Lean Support Staff

Doing more with less

Many businesses these days are pushing staff to do more with less. Despite the sharp increase in file transfers over the past few years (+800%), the team has maintained the same number of employees to manage the file transfer infrastructure. "It says a lot for Axway’s solutions that we have been able to maintain the same staffing requirements despite the sharp increase in file transfers. With Axway’s centralized management and monitoring solutions, more transfers and more complexity does not necessarily translate to more monitoring work. The advantage of a central interface enables us to have direct access to all our gateways to manage everything we need to do on a daily basis," Fenard concluded.

¹BNP Paribas is a European leader in global banking and financial services. It has one of the largest international networks with operations in 85 countries and 205,300 employees.
