DB Schenker Implements Axway Synchrony™ for Multi-enterprise Integration Platform

DB Schenker, one of the leading global logistics service providers, chose Axway and the Synchrony™ platform as the foundation for Schenker AG's multi-enterprise integration platform, Schenker Worldwide Online Realtime Data Interchange Network (SWORD).

Axway-based SWORD presents one centralized interface to DB Schenker's global logistics customers for land transport, air and ocean freight, and is currently live in Asia, America, and Europe. SWORD helps DB Schenker process various business transactions, from procurement orders, to processing and tracking of shipments, to invoicing. The EDI/EAI-platform controls the necessary data exchange and handles the integration of existing systems and applications.

SWORD provides the flexibility, availability and reliability the international logistics service provider needs to address complex business integration scenarios. The scalable framework visualizes all technical and business processes, and enables continuous monitoring of all data streams. Besides customer- and DB Schenker-specific data formats, the platform also supports all industry-related formats and transfer protocols such as (S)FTP(S), OFTP, AS2, and HTTP(S). Along with the introduction of SWORD, DB Schenker also implemented globally consistent processes for interacting with its customers.

"We were looking to establish a globally accepted platform for the exchange of data. By adopting an integrated change management approach, we also harmonized our processes and generated a global, worldwide organizational unit," states Thomas Endries, Director, Corporate Customer & Enterprise Integration, Schenker AG. "Axway-based SWORD allows us to flexibly adjust our throughput, shorten turnover cycles, and generate more transparency. Axway has been a professional partner from the start, attending to our specifications and adjustment requests."

Since the 1980's, the company has been running a predecessor of SWORD, which served as a central platform for internal data exchange, communication with external partners, and integration of key accounts. In addition, country-specific platforms based on various technologies were operated in order to integrate regional clients. The integration of BAX Global initiated the replacement of the existing systems in 2006 and set the groundwork for the global implementation of Axway Synchrony. This solution includes a DB Schenker-specific framework which dynamically depicts the logistics processes and their underlying individual procedures, and is entirely configurable via a customized graphical user interface (GUI). The platform's successful "go live" took place last March, and the migration of the existing systems and the deployment of new interfaces are underway.

"For global providers such as DB Schenker, it is extremely important to be able to rely upon a robust collaboration platform," adds Christophe Fabre, CEO at Axway. "With Synchrony, we supplied a scalable, reliable and high-performance platform, which enables DB Schenker to ideally utilize its strengths in global competition."
